Custom Orthotics

While we stand walk or run, very large forces of pressure are directed from the ground into our feet. These pressure forces are directed in 3 - dimensions and therefore have a very pronounced effect on the feet legs knees hips and spine. This type of force exists because each of us has a unique 3 - dimensional foot type that may be inherited or derived from injuries affecting the shape of our feet. The shape is referred to as the " neutral position " and it is the shape of our feet when the joints are congruent (lined up).

It is the purpose custom designed orthotics to maintain the feet in that neutral position as we stand walk or run. Excess motion away from neutral forces the feet into a compensated position with the resulting overuse of muscles, tendons and ligaments. It must be emphasized that the creation of orthotics is based on design principles developed with many years of biomechanical research.

Once it has been concluded that a biomechincal fault exists and a decision has been made to correct this fault the first step is to capture a 3 - dimensional image of the feet. This is accomplished by producing a neutral suspension plaster mould of each foot while it is maintained in the neutral position. The componentsof a design correction are then transmitted to the professional orthotics laboratory where orthotists and orthotic tecnicians convert the information into a functional orthotic device.
